SLP Leave of Absence Round-Up

January 7, 2019 BY Kelly C. Bawden, MS, CCC-SLP

I started a new budgeting program a few months ago and one of the core tenants of the system is that there is no such thing as a surprise expense. All of the things that we consider unexpected expenses are, in fact, incredibly predictable. Oh no! My timing belt needs to be replaced! What a surprise! Well, actually, not really. You know that, as a person with a car, that there will be maintenance expenses, and that the older your car gets, the more they’re going to cost. You even know that, eventually, your car will reach a point where paying to fix it costs more than it’s worth and you’ll have to get a new car. So, while you may not be able to say with pinpoint accuracy the day and time you’ll need to put money towards your car, you can say with absolute certainty that you will have to do it someday.

Put a different way, into every life, a little rain must fall. Sometimes that rain is a hurricane and sometimes it’s a light mist, but one thing is for certain: you should definitely invest in a good raincoat.

So, in the interest of keeping yourself warm and dry, rid yourself of the notion that your SLP will never need to go on leave. They will. It may feel surprising when it happens, but remind yourself that it really isn’t. It’s highly predictable and you are prepared for this. Or, you will be, anyway. Here are a few posts from our archive to help you get started:
