OMD, OMG.

Earlier this week Kim Mahi and Lori Pastoor wowed our group with their presentation on Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).  I mean, really.

Kim and Lori have received extensive training in this area.  They shared case studies of clients they see at the Hello Clinic, as well as videos of treatment.

Orofacial Myology is more than just tongue thrust or tongue tie. It’s the study of the muscles of the face and mouth, and looks at the relationship between structure and function.

Did you know…

  • Up to 80% of children receiving speech therapy have co-occurring OMD?
  • OMDs can impact breathing, eating, speech, and sleep?  And even posture?
  • Specialized treatment for OMDs can improve all of these?

I didn’t.  It was fascinating to learn about this specialized field – we are lucky to have Kim and Lori on our team, and even luckier that they shared their expertise with us.
