Fall PD Event with Kerry Mandulak!

November 8, 2018 BY Gina Ossanna, CCC-SLP

We had a great evening with Dr. Kerry Mandulak from Pacific University as she shared with us her endless wisdom and expertise on cleft palate. Most of us only get to work with a handful of children with cleft palate, and rarely is this topic included in our graduate coursework.  We were thrilled to gain some working knowledge of how to evaluate and treat articulation disorders for these children.

Kerry shared such nuggets as how to determine when surgery is needed vs. speech therapy, how to detect a submucosal cleft, and strategies to improve speech production.

We also put our core value of Give into action for the night. Clinicians brought toiletry items to donate to Rose Haven Day Center for Women and Children, a day shelter and community center serving women, children and gender non-conforming people experiencing trauma, poverty, and physical and mental health challenges.

Attendees enjoyed dinner on our new environmentally friendly dining set that we will now be using for all of our social and professional events!

It was a great night. Now we are all counting down the days to our annual winter retreat January at the Grand Lodge out in Oregon’s wine country… More on that to come!
