How quickly our seasons have switched from the hottest days of summer to raincoat and sweater weather. Perhaps the cooler weather will make it easier for kids to settle into new schools and routines. This time of year our clinic schedule also changes dramatically. We have compassion for our families and recognize that getting into a new routine takes time, and right now, every day feels like a really long day. Hang in there! It will get easier.
Has your child ever participated in a therapy group? We’ve noticed that really magical things happen when we put together a group of clinic friends who are around the same age and working on similar goals. Case in point? Check out the super-fun first video from our Stop-Motion Animation camp:
According to Alice, who ran the animation camp with Lori, the campers collaborated and connected from the get-go. “We played a few ice breaker games then dove headfirst into our cookie decorating video. The way our group communicated their ideas and worked together to make this video was impressive. When there were too many ideas, they chose to vote and no one had hard feelings when their idea didn’t win out.”
We’re excited to be kicking off some new speech and occupational therapy groups in the coming weeks. Check them out, below, and contact us or chat with the front desk if you’d like to join!
Early Elementary Social Group (ages 6-8)
Lori and Christina will focus on play skills, group participation, and social problem-solving. This hour-long group meets alternate Tuesdays at 5:15, starting September 24 through December 3.
The Project Squad (ages 8-14)
The Project Squad will focus on social pragmatics, executive functioning (with emphasis on organization, planning, time management, and cooperative projects), self-monitoring/self-regulation, and social problem-solving. This hour-long group will be project-based. It meets alternate Tuesdays at 5:15, starting September 17 through December 10. Over the summer session, this group tested recipes, rated them and put together a cookbook to showcase their work!
Life Skills for Young Adults (teens to young adults)
This group is for those needing to increase independent daily living skills and social skills. This weekly, hour-long group is run by Sarah and Christina, who both have experience leading life skills groups. The group meets every Thursday at 5:15 pm, starting September 19 to November 14 (canceled on Halloween). We will focus on: self-care, community/emergency safety, home management, social and leisure skills. We plan to go on community outings (walkable from the clinic) that target skills learned.
We can’t wait to see what our fall groups will cook up!
